Very average. There's a lot of good points and a lot of bad points.Good stuff: The visual style is pretty nice and the game's general pacing is pretty solid, there are few instances of having to stop moving and wait for stuff, though they are present. There's also a decent number of neat gimmicks, especially in the last world, and the main mechanics are solid on the whole.Bad stuff: A lot of weird, clunky level design and weird level design choices that just feel... off. The game's insistence on using checkpoints as an obstacle for 100% completion. The final boss fight is absolute trash and goes against the game's basic mechanics. The audio is a bit mediocre. Your character feels a bit small onscreen and it can get hard to tell where you are at points. Also there's one random level where you can't get no death and all tokens at the same time.I don't really have a strong opinion on this game either way but it's generally decent entertainment, and an okay length for the price (5 or so hours to play through getting all tokens and no deaths, and then a bit more to find the last secrets and achievements). Replaying it probably softened my opinion on it as well since it's, well, decent platforming when it wants to be.I can't say I'd return to it though either. It's just very... fine, with a few roadbumps along the way, a few bad levels, and that final boss is really, truly terrible.. At 6am, I woke up wishing I wasn't too sleepy to finish this previous night. Fortunately, I spent only one hour before I completed it so I could rest again. On Rusty Trails is one of maybe 4 games that I've done this with, being that I value my sleep quite a bit. Although there have been plenty of titles that I absolutely adore and look forward to playing, this one really hooked me in, especially with its perfectly short length. The number one reason that I love this game is its idiosyncratic style: image-based speech bubbles, goofy sentient platforms, and playful darkness are not often seen in this medium! There's really nothing like it out there (other than the developer's other games), and that's an excellent risk to take, because Black Pants Studios really knows what they're doing. The gameplay itself is excellent due to the tight controls and swift movement. Despite the fact that your little Elvis and the environment switch colours with fun animations, the engine registering this shift is quick enough as to make this not an issue whatsoever. In fact, many of levels here require quick reflexes in order to beat them, and doing so successfully just feels cool.Though the graphics on their own aren't spectacular, their animations and the compositions in that they are arranged oozes life. Add in the strange soundtrack and you have a video game that feels like a continuation of a comic that is actually is (see the free DLC).On Rusty Trails feels like a game perfectly suited for autumn, with it's colourful-yet-somewhat-melancholic vibe. Although I avoid referencing other games in these reviews, I'd also have to recommend Outland since it's also a red-blue-switching fall season platformer, though with fighting instead of pure platforming.. tl;dr: Great variant on Super Meat Boy, highly recommended. This game is a slightly easier version of Super Meat Boy with a few mechanic differences. You can seamlessly walk on walls and ceilings, rather than sliding down them. You also can also flip between red and blue color, which makes blocks appear and disappear and makes you immune to enemies of the same color. The artwork is beautiful and the game world amusing. Much less punishing than SMB, plus has optional save points (and achievements for skipping them). It's a good game if you like those kinds of platformers.. Enjoyable platformer. The mechanics are working well and the gameplay is optimal. The experience though is short and of little challenge. I suggest you to buy the game on sale if you are into platformers.. On Rusty Trails is a competent, refreshing platform that I whole heartily recommend.I played this on blind faith in the developers after finishing Tiny and Big and loving it (another game of theirs). After taking a few minutes to get used to the platforming style the flow of the gameplay felt very smooth. I would recommend not worrying about collecting tokens and 100%ing the game until you are finished a world then going back. This will maintain the smoothness. 100%ing does have its merits as in some levels the route completely changes for a more challenging experience. The game is fairly short and does not outstay its welcome. I would love to see some sort of sequel or even just a map editor for the community to go wild. I understand with a very small indie team that you have to stay inside your project scope and this does feel like a very well manage development but a map editor as paid DLC to fund development would be a great idea. The story and world was interesting and unique enough to be a nice wrapper to justify the gameplay and your actions. It made the whole experience rather whimsical.Music was great and strange, typical of Black Pants games. Sound effects were a bit hit and miss with some like the lasers and green blocks being flat out annoying.I guess any criticisms would be nit-picky. On the final boss fight I fell outside the map and couldn't finish the level. This was fixed with a simple restart. There's not much more to say about the game. It is a neat game in a neat little package and well worth your time. :). Really terrible, bare bones platformer. I'm really surprised at the positive reviews, there are so many better platformers available on Steam.. This is a pretty awesome & challenging platformers! For one, this developer has a creative imagination, which results in pretty cool art design! Tiny and Big is a great 3D platforming with innovative mechanics, so I was looking forward to this one as well ;)It is a simple phase shifting platformer with beautiful design and a good amount of challenge to keep you entertained, yet sometimes slightly frustrated :)It has great level design...You can fly through some levels, or like me, take your time to complete everything in each level, which is pleasantly challenging. It is not too expensive and will provide many hours of enjoyment for these who enjoy platforming :). Just a mediocre platformer with stylish artstyle. Only recommended if you are a real fan of platformer genre and you don't have anything to play and its on sale.
