It sounds like you have a bad Over The Air update. That as it may be 3 things can cause this update to error out. The first is being connected to the original carrier for the phone. Second make sure the device is powered on and connected to Wi-Fi. Third and most important please ensure the device has free space to download the update. The LG phone has updates pushed out to the device whenever they become available, so the phone will immediately start the download. With that in mind if the device has no free space for the update, it will also not have room for text messages, hence why rebooting gets messages to pop up. The phone when turned off deletes the incomplete update and downloads the text messages, before staring another attempt on the update.
